Score a Touchdown! What Small Companies Can Learn From the Super Bowl Ads

The Super Bowl ads seem like a far stretch from small company marketing, but you can learn from their example. The Super Bowl ads have been successful for years, and even quite successful in a challenging economy. For the 2012 game, ads for the Super Bowl have cost $3.5 million dollars for a 30-second spot. Here are a few important things the Super Bowl ads tell us about marketing as a small business:

Find Your Audience. There are more opportunities than ever to market, which makes it even more important to really target your audience. This can take time, patience and research. Do you know who your target customer is? If you don’t, now is the time to focus on understanding who this is, and where you can market to them.

Focus on Brand, Stay on Message. You can have a snazzy ad or fun promotions, but they need to be focused on your company and your “brand.” Show your marketing ideas to employees, close vendors you trust, family and friends before you try it out in the market. Get feedback and be sure you are staying on message. You want potential customers to know that this marketing is for your business and your business only.

Quality Matters. One of the reasons the Super Bowl commercials are so popular is that TV watchers know and expect “the best of the best.” Advertisers put their best foot forward and many of the ads are top notch. Even the ads that aren’t top notch, are often quite memorable. What does this mean for the small business? With any marketing effort you make, quality matters. Take the time to put your very best efforts out there and potential customers will certainly notice. In time they will come to expect only A+ quality from your company.

Don’t hide from trying to be humorous. A great way to get your customer’s attention is with humor. Everyone loves to laugh. So don’t shy away from using humor in your marketing. But do know your audience, and understand what humor they will find the funniest and also tasteful. A funeral parlor probably won’t use the same marketing humor that a fast food restaurant would. A bit of humor is enjoyable in marketing and a great way to make your marketing quite memorable. Just remember your audience and what’s going to be funny to them.

Target an Eager Market. Today’s customer is harder than ever to reach with marketing. But still, many are just as eager to listen to your message. They actively want and are searching for your products and services, to fill their needs and wants. It is your goal to find that eager market and to target them. There are many customer markets available today, and finding the “right” one in many ways is both an art and a science. But when you find that target market? You’ll know because you receive response to your marketing, response that gets the results you desire. It’s totally worth it!
